Sarah B. Mertens is the Democratic candidate for Illinois State Senate in District 35, a sprawling seat that takes in parts of Boone, DeKalb, Kane, McHenry and Winnebago counties. A Crystal Lake resident, she has built a career in education and public service, working as a playground supervisor for School District 47 and previously as an ESL teacher, while earlier holding a marketing operations role in the health-insurance industry.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in German language teacher education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her campaign centers on protecting voting rights, shifting the tax burden away from working families, defending healthcare access including reproductive rights, funding public education, and conserving the district’s farmland and natural resources.
